How to Replace a Broken Window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
