How To

How do you replace a broken window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
