Do I need a license to become a handyman?

To become an independent contractor in most states, you don't need to have a license (as opposed with a salaried worker). However, there are some requirements you must fulfill:

  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • You will need to complete a four week course at a vocational college.

Because you only need tools and yourself, being a handyman is more time-consuming than contracting. However, you must be able to manage your own workload and schedule, while contractors typically rely on subcontractors to do most of the work.

How do you replace a broken window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Let the caulking set overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
