How do I replace a cracked window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking set overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
