How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
