How do I replace a damaged window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
