When is the right time to hire a handyman?

How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
