How do you replace a broken window?
Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.
First, remove the old glass from its frame
First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.
Second step: Clean your new glass
To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.
The third step is to reinstall the glass
Attach the window frames to the panes. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.
Fourth step: Repair the damage
If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.
Fourth step: Sealing the area
After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.
Let the caulking set overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
